Purity Ring 1100 Warehouse, Austin TX March 16
Published Mar 17, 2012The huge industrial space of 1100 Warehouse was eerily dark, just minimally lit by natural light pouring in from a few skylights above. The vibe was foreboding -- especially in contrast to the humid Texas day unfolding outside -- and the venue fairly close to capacity for the Canadian future pop duo. The two of them stood in front of a tricolour banner with a few coloured lights on an otherwise unlit stage. Megan James's voice sounded great and their blend of infectious pop and witch house filled the cavernous space with its subtle beauty and deep beats. With Corin Roddick triggering the samples, and seemingly drumming on some homemade device made of lights, singer Megan James sometimes accented the rhythms by taking a beater to a kick drum placed on its side. The heavy bass and her strong and sensual voice filled up every inch of the huge space, and the crowd lapped it up.
