Matthew Good Responds to Allegations of Abuse
The artist has denied all claims lodged against him by his former partner, Hayley Mather
Published Feb 12, 2021In the wake of Warner Music Canada's decision to part ways with Matthew Good, who stands accused of being a "serial abuser" by a former partner Hayley Mather, the Canadian artist has responded to allegations, denying the accounts detailed by Mather.
Good posted a statement to his various social media platforms late yesterday (February 11) after Global News reported his label's statement about cutting ties.
"I am saddened by Warner Canada's decision. Gender-based violence, or abuse, is wrong and — let me be clear: neither happened during my relationship with my ex-partner," he wrote. "I would like to affirm my commitment to the women whose courage has inspired the #MeToo movement. The past year has been stressful for all of us. I ask for privacy so I can focus on my mental health."
A Toronto-area model and music producer, Mather accused Good of being a "serial abuser," telling her story on February 3 via Instagram. Mather has since deleted her post.
"During our relationship, I had been cheated on frequently (unknowingly, except for one occasion in which I regrettably forgave him), constantly lied to, sexually coerced, groomed, emotionally and mentally abused and manipulated," she wrote.
In a separate post, Mather shared an email allegedly sent by Good as a "Last Correspondence" from December 30 of last year. The email reads, in part, "There are a great many things I can quite easily be accused of. And the majority of it is true. But then, you'd have to have lived my life to know why those things exist. I am who I am, which is obviously a pretty fucked up person. You don't have to tell me that."
Yesterday, in response to the allegations, Warner Music Canada shared a statement that read: "Warner Music Canada has seen the recent allegations against Matthew Good and take them very seriously. We have parted ways with Matthew Good."
