Responding to a question on Twitter, someone from Smash Mouth claimed they initially rejected a request for their music to appear in the soundtrack for the animated adventure. When the band turned it down, however, they allege that Dreamworks representative Michael Austin begged them to change their mind.
As for Corgan's claim that the Smashing Pumpkins were asked to do the soundtrack before Smash Mouth, a rep from Smash Mouth said, "We assume multiple bands we're asked. If it feeds Billy's ego to think they we're [sic] first let him think that. Def would have been a darker approach."
Smash Mouth's response can be read below, where you'll also find Corgan's recent story about his own experience with the Shrek soundtrack. Here's hoping this whole thing ends positively, with a Smashing Pumpkins/Smash Mouth collaboration for Shrek 5.
Actually we said no and Michael Austin from Dreamworks kept calling. That went on for over a month. We assume multiple bands we're asked. If it feeds Billy's ego to think they we're first let him think that. Def would have been a darker approach. @THE_EELS are on it & others.— Smash Mouth (@smashmouth) August 16, 2018
